THE SAFE SUITE

Bio-mathematical models are very useful to identify the scale and scope of any fatigue hazards. One of the first steps in the FRMS implementation process is to identify the fatigue hazard by analysing employee duty schedules (planned and actual) through the SAFE model.

SAFE has been created specifically for the aviation industry and its algorithms validated with a huge dataset collected from pilots performing their duties across the world. Many major airlines have contribute to the dataset including Air New Zealand, British Airways, Lufthansa, JAL, Emirates, DHL, Pan Am and Britannia. SAFE is a very mature model having been in use since the early 1990s. Every study completed has a component that checks the data collected with the estimates provided by the model, showing close coherence between the data and the model estimates.

Cabin crew have a different fatigue profile to pilots owing to the nature of their occupation. Accordingly, FRMSc has extended the SAFE suite of models to include the Cabin crew Alertness and Rest Evaluation (CARE) model which is integrated seamlessly into the SAFE platform. SAFE and CARE have been extended and validated for corporate aviation, air taxis and emergency medical services.

SAFE is very easy to use and will quickly identify the faigue hazards within schedules. The model is useful to identify how many threats exist, how big they are and where they are in any roster of aircrew schedules. The scalability of the system permits up to 300,000 duties discharged by many thousands of aircrew can be uploaded and passed through the algorithms in any one file, though higher capacities of well over 1milion duties can be provided if required. API code is also available to embed in a rostering suite in order to drive data directly into the model at the press of a button within the roster window.

SAFE is connected to the powerful HARVEST analytics package for overall fatigue risk management. HARVEST takes schedule details and the outputs of the SAFE model analyses, to provide a useful tool for FRMS managers to evaluate trends, fatigue hotspots in schedule design and identify fatigue risk.

SAFE is a cloud based solution and requires a license to gain access to the algorithms. Click here to contact us to find out more.

THE SAFE MODEL

SAFE is an acronym for the System for Aircrew Fatigue Evaluation: a computer program that includes a suite of algorithms that allow a range of factors influencing alertness in aircrew to be evaluated.

BACKGROUND TO THE SAFE MODEL

Initially developed for use by Regulators to assess applications for flights outside prescriptive regulations, this tool has been designed and validated for use in developing aircrew duty rosters for short, long and ultra-long routes.

CREATING SAFE

In the beginning, SAFE was created as a one-off regulatory tool for the UK Civil Aviation Authority by developing the existing general QinetiQ Alertness Model and validating it against actual duties performed by aircrew across a range of airlines and their operations.

THE CARE MODEL

The Cabin crew Alertness and Rest Evaluation (CARE) model has been built using the underlying fatigue model that is built into SAFE. The CARE plug-in overrides the pilot workload algorithms in SAFE and replaces them with algorithms that describe the workload and rest periods taken by cabin crew.

INTEGRATING MODELS

Popular commercially available and bespoke rostering systems provide the basic flight duty data and crew composition data - both planned and actual. Comparing these gives a measure of roster stability and of course the analysis of the actual roster will provide useful data.

THE FATIGUE RISK INDEX

A Shift worker model with particular applications in maintenance engineers and other ground crew in aviation; locomotive drivers and track-side workers in rail industry. FRI Has applications in other shift worker roles in health, emergency services, power generation and other general industrial contexts.
